Campo del Cielo meteorite - meaning, its effects and properties
The Campo del Cielo meteorite is an iron meteorite located 1,000 km northwest of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The place of impact is called Piguem Nonralta, in Spanish Campo del Cielo, that is, "heavenly field". There are about 26 craters with an area of 3 x 18.5 kilometers, with the largest of the craters measuring 115 x 91 meters in diameter.
The craters and surrounding areas contain numerous fragments of this iron meteorite. It is estimated that the main part of the original meteorite is larger than 4 m in diameter. The carbon method used to determine the age of organic materials was used to analyze burnt wood at the place where the meteorite fell. The date of the fall was around 2,200 to 2,700 BC. Campo del Cielo meteorites contain mostly iron and were first discovered in 1576.
