The lotus flower symbolizes the change of darkness into light, the change of ignorance into knowledge. The candlestick is made from oyster shells (placuna placenta), also known as capiz shells after the place where the oysters are collected, i.e. around Panay City, Capiz Province, Philippines. After cleaning, the shells are naturally translucent, and when dyed they allow a wonderful interplay of colors and light.
