It is no longer mined in India, but remains an important center for diamond cutting (e.g. in Surat)

South Africa

The first large diamond discovered in 1867: the Eureka diamond. The opening of Kimberley in 1871 started the diamond rush. From here are the famous mines: Big Hole , Cullinan Mine (where the famous Cullinan diamond was found - the largest rough diamond of all time). South Africa is one of the world's largest diamond producers.

Botswana

Botswana is one of the world's largest diamond producers. It is home to the most famous mine: Jwaneng, considered the richest diamond mine in the world by production value. The diamonds are of exceptional purity and quality.

Russia, Russian Federation

Yakutia region (Siberia), mines around the city of Mirny. Here is the Mir Mine (Mirny Mine) - a huge crater visible from space. Russia is today the largest producer of diamonds by volume.

Canada

Canada has relatively new deposits, discovered only in the 1990s. Well-known mines: Ekati , Diavik , Gahcho Kué. Diamonds from Canada are highly valued for their ethical mining and purity.

Australia

The Argyle mine (closed 2020) was known primarily for its pink diamonds , which are among the rarest in the world. It also produced brown and champagne diamonds.

Interesting facts

The largest colorless diamond ever found was the Cullinan, weighing 3,106.75 carats (621.35 g). It was discovered in January 1905 at the Premier Mine in South Africa and was named after the mine owner. The stone was cut into smaller pieces and polished. The largest is called Cullinan I or the Great Star of Africa and is the largest diamond in the world (530.4 carats, 106.08 g). It is set in the Sovereign's Scepter with Cross. The second largest diamond, Cullinan II or the Second Star of Africa (317.4 carats, 63.48 g), is set in the British Crown Jewels. Seven other diamonds were in the personal possession of Queen Elizabeth II, who inherited them from her grandmother Queen Mary.

The Hope Diamond is a type IIb diamond, located in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., and is surrounded by many legends. Its value is estimated at $250 million, and it is a gray-blue color. 

The Koh-i-Noor diamond, which translates as Mountain of Light, is a clear white to slightly blue oval-shaped diamond. It is part of the British Crown Jewels – in the cross of Queen Mary's crown.

In 2015, the Blue Moon diamond was auctioned at Sotheby's auction house in Geneva for 1.2 billion crowns.

Cleaning a diamond is a simple but important process because it helps maintain its shine and beauty.

Cleaning diamond jewelry at home

Prepare:

  • A bowl of lukewarm water.

  • A little mild detergent .

  • Soft toothbrush.

  • A clean , soft microfiber cloth.

Procedure:

Mix the solution by adding a few drops of detergent to a bowl of water, soak the jewelry and leave it in the solution for about 15 to 20 minutes. Then gently scrub with a soft toothbrush, rinse with lukewarm water and gently dry with a cloth.

Avoid:

  • abrasive cleaners, bleaches and toothpaste,

  • ultrasound.

Professional cleaning
