Pyrolusite crystals are black, and are very rare and occur as whole, cluster-like, fibrous aggregates, or coatings, dendrites, tubers and stalactites. Dendritic pyroluzite enclosed in chalcedony is called moss agate. There are deposits in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany, Hungary, the USA, etc.

Pyrolusite got its name in 1827, from Greek. It is derived from the words fire and wash, as it was used to remove the brown and green tint in glass making.
Chemically, it is manganese dioxide. It is found together with calcite and quartz and iron oxides such as hematite and goethite.

Black crystals, minerals and stones are symbols of strength and protection. Black indicates the absence of light, e.g. a dark night sky among the stars.
