What is the Gua Sha massage technique?

Gua sha (pronounced "guasha") - this is a natural, alternative therapy, the principle of which is rubbing, massaging and thus blood circulation of the skin and the support of lymph flow using massage rollers or differently shaped stones for Gua Sha massages in the place where the massager is applied. It is an ancient Chinese healing technique that helps reduce even chronic pain and inflammation.

How is the Gua Sha technique performed?

Short or long strokes are used for rubbing, which improves the microcirculation of the massaged tissues, i.e. better blood circulation. The tools used for massage are called "gua". Massage oil is first applied to the skin and then the massage begins with short or long strokes. The purpose is to support the flow of "Chi" energy.

"Chi" (that is, the energy that flows all around us and gathers in places that Feng Shui considers auspicious. Chi brings happiness, joy, wealth and longevity) in all directions, so the Chi multiplies even more.

Gua sha is used on the back, buttocks, neck, arms and legs, and also on the face.

Apply massage oil to the skin.
Apply "gua" and massage in one direction with gentle short or long strokes.
You can gradually increase the intensity of the pressure until it is comfortable for you. Massaging causes redness of the skin, which disappears on its own within a few minutes.

What are the benefits of Gua sha technique?

Gua sha helps reduce inflammation, it is used for pain associated with chronic diseases, such as arthritis (joint inflammation), soft tissue rheumatism, muscle and joint pain.
Pain is an accompanying phenomenon of some change compared to the physiological state, e.g. one of the manifestations of inflammation. Rubbing and massaging leads to a reduction in pain and thus the manifestation of inflammation.
Gua can be used:

- for headaches and migraines.
- with breast tension during breastfeeding.
Does Gua sha have side effects?
If the massage is performed in such a way that it is not painful, then the technique is safe. High pressure could cause bruising in some individuals, especially people who suffer from any of the diseases related to the blood-forming system. Therefore, it is necessary to take into account the state of health, any diseases, and in case of doubt consult the use of this type of massage with a doctor.
