Buying your baby's first earrings is a very individual decision, primarily depending on the parents, as well as on tradition and the doctor's recommendation.

When is the right time?

• Earrings are most often purchased between the 3rd and 6th month, i.e. at the time when the baby has had his first vaccination (hexavaccine - vaccination against polio, tetanus, diphtheria, whooping cough, hepatitis B and diseases caused by the Haemophillus influenzae type b bacteria).

• Some parents leave ear piercing for later or until the child decides on their own.

• It is not advisable to pierce earlobes during vaccination (there should be a gap of several weeks), when you have an elevated temperature, or if you have an ongoing illness.

Should ears be pierced or earrings be put on?

Putting on earrings is very simple and quick, with less pain and stress for both the child and the parents.

Ear piercing is done with a needle.
Before piercing, the lobe can be numbed with a local anesthetic - e.g. Emla cream, by applying a thin layer at least 1 hour before the procedure.

Who is allowed to wear earrings or pierce their ears?

A doctor, nurse or specialist in violations of the integrity of human skin.
An antiseptic (disinfectant) is applied to the earlobe, and after the piercing, the puncture is checked and whether the earring is properly closed. Parents are instructed on ear care and possible complications.

Do not remove the earrings from your ears, as the holes can grow back quite quickly, within a few days. If the earrings were pierced, they can be changed after 2 months at the earliest.

• gold,

• silver, so-called sterling, which contains 92.5% silver and usually copper,

• silver with a rhodium layer, which protects against oxidation and tarnishing, increases the resistance of the metal and is also hypoallergenic,

• stainless steel.

The first earrings should definitely not be made of base metal, as they can cause an allergic reaction.

Earrings should be round, small, and generally comfortable for your baby. Long earrings could cause your baby to pull on them or could easily get caught.
