Amber - its properties and uses
Amber is one of the world's oldest and most sought-after treasures, considered the "gold of the sea". The age of amber varies between 360 and one million years and comes from the Protozoan to Quaternary period. It is a sticky resin that oozed from pine trees, caught pieces of plants, animals, etc. and was gradually petrified by heat and pressure. The color of amber can be from dark brown to light to lemon yellow.
Amber is a very powerful healing and protective stone. Absorbs negativity and restores balance. In earlier times, it was often used for various rituals. It helps with patience and decision-making. Increases confidence. Lonely people are attracted to friends and partners. It enhances the natural beauty of the wearer. It is considered a talisman of beauty, protection and renewal. It is often depicted as drops of the sun, the tears of the gods, and has been much used throughout history for its beautiful gold and brown color, as a valuable ornament, and for its magical and healing properties.
Amber in Feng Shui represents the energy of water, the energy of silence, the power of calm and purification. He is the embodiment of unrealized possibilities and abilities. It is pliable and very strong. The water element brings the power of regeneration and rebirth, it is the energy of the circle of life. The amber lucky tree is suitable for any space that is used for relaxation, relaxation, prayer or meditation. The energy of water is traditionally associated with the northern part of a room, apartment or house. It is associated with the area of career and life path.
Amber is used to reduce pain not only in the physical body, but also in the mind, to suppress negative energy, increase vitality and to harmonize the chakras, especially the sacral and solar plexus.
Amber is associated with the sun, a drop of amber represents tears personifying loneliness or sadness. Since amber preserved "life", it was often used to honor the dead in funeral ceremonies, placed in tombs as a guardian of souls in the afterlife.
Amber is traditionally used as a protective stone for children , in the form of beads placed around the neck, especially to soothe the pain of teething. Because a small child could be at risk of swallowing a bead, the length of the necklaces is such that a child cannot put the beads in their mouth. If there are still concerns about, for example, the necklace breaking, it is only possible to place it near the child so that it does not reach it.
In the past, the roots of various plants or bread crusts were also used to reduce pain during teething.
Amber in ancient traditions and legends
Amber is one of the first substances that man began to use for decoration in the form of jewelry, but also talismans and amulets and funerary objects in honor of the deceased as a permanent memory of life, as evidenced by finds from around 8,000 years BC
In ancient times, amber was a symbol of nostalgia, sadness and was often associated with tears, as a dried drop of amber is very similar to tears.
One of the legends says that the name amber comes from the Latin electrum and the ancient Greek electron, which came from the name elektor = shining sun. Greek mythology tells of Phaethon, the son of the Sun (the god Helios), who when he was killed by lightning, his sisters wept so that they turned into poplars and their tears falling into the river Eridanus solidified into drops of amber.
In Scandinavia, amber is considered the tears of Freya, the Viking goddess of love and beauty.
Another Latin term for amber was "succinum" (from succus = juice) because it was thought to come from an extinct species of pine (Pinites succinifer) that secreted it. Succinum caught fire easily and pieces were burned and used for its calming effects due to its fragrance and also for its disinfectant powers, as it was believed to destroy disease agents. Succinia smoke was used during childbirth to provide a favorable environment, in the Middle Ages this smoke was used as incense to ward off evil spirits and charms and to ward off snakes and mosquitoes.
Succinum was easy to carve and was popular with Eastern cultures.
Amber was considered a protective amulet especially for children, and Pliny recorded necklaces made of nuggets that children wore around their necks as protection against disease, teething pain and negative energy.
The healing effects of amber were valued especially in antiquity. Amber was worn on the body, mainly around the neck to protect health, to relieve symptoms of fever and infection, sore throat, headache, toothache and against respiratory diseases. A recipe is also known from that time, where amber powder was mixed with water or wine and used for stomach problems. If mixed with honey and rose oil, it was believed to cure deafness, mental suffering and ward off eye diseases. It has been used externally to promote wound healing and as a balm against rheumatism. It was applied to the chest in case of bronchial diseases.
Amber was used to decorate knives, especially Jewish and Arab knives, as it was believed to staunch bleeding.
Amber is found mainly in the Baltic Sea region, and is also produced by Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Burma and Sumatra. Its hardness is 2.0 to 2.5, it can be transparent or cloudy, in color from whitish, through light yellow, the most common honey yellow, orange to light and dark brown. Rarely found in red, green (pressure or temperature treated) and very rare blue amber from the Dominican Republic and Sumatra. In ancient times, blue amber was used mainly by priests who believed that it was possible to control air, fire and water through it and obtain blessings from the gods.
Amber has traditionally been used to increase vitality, promote positive energy , dampen bad moods, and relieve anxiety. Golden-orange is a symbol of beauty and tenderness and a talisman for attracting love. It is suitable for removing negative energy from a room by placing a piece of amber in the space or burning it as incense.
Amber is a stone of balance and stability in our lives, it promotes patience and adaptability. Its soft energy promotes cheerfulness, confidence and good mood.
